Bicycle accidents and safety

As Spring weather brings more bicyclists onto the roads, it is important to understand the dangers posed to bicyclists.
As a participant of the Pan Massachusetts Challenge, which is the largest cancer fundraising event in the country, I find these figures to be pretty eye-opening.
In 2011, 677 bicyclists were killed and an additional 48,000 were injured in motor vehicle traffic crashes. bicyclist deaths accounted for 2 percent of all motor vehicle traffic fatalities, and made up 2 percent of the people injured in traffic crashes during the year.

The number of bicyclists killed in 2011 is 9 percent higher than the 623 bicyclists killed in 2010.

Important Safety Reminders

While we hope for your safety, if you have injured as a result of bicycle accident, you may be able to recover for your injuries. Medical bills from accidents can easily exceed $10,000 and may even reach hundreds of thousands of dollars depending on the extent of the injuries and treatment required. Sometimes, people may suffer lost wages if they are forced to stay out of work due to an injury and in some cases people may be unable to return to their previous occupation, which may result in serious economic damages and financial harm. In certain cases, if someone has sustained injuries and cannot return to their trade or occupation, the use of an economist may be required to assist in evaluating the scope of any lost future earnings, which can be substantial.
