Roslindale Woman Killed in Saturday Mass Pike Crash

The mother of two killed in a multi-car crash on the Massachusetts Turnpike yesterday afternoon has been identified as Ana M. Espinal of Roslindale.

Espinal, 43, was headed to New York State to spend Memorial Day weekend with her sister and to meet her 19-day-old niece, her brother-in-law said. She was pronounced dead at the scene of the three-car crash on the off-ramp to Route 128 north in Weston.

“Our family is devastated by her loss,” brother-in-law Ramon Gutierrez of New Jersey said this afternoon.

Espinal’s two sons, aged 15 and 17, were trapped in the wreck of their 1996 Toyota Corolla with their mother’s body. The brothers remained hospitalized today with minor injuries. “They’re keeping them there for observation,” Gutierrez said. “At least the kids are OK. She was their everything.” Gutierrez said he visited his nephews last night.

“They were holding up pretty good,” he said, “but they still can’t believe she’s gone. They’re going to need a lot of help.”

The 17-year-old will be attending college in Maine in the fall, Gutierrez said. Gutierrez said Espinal was a native New Yorker who had lived in the Boston area for close to a decade and worked for a city dry cleaner.

The drivers of the other two cars involved in yesterday’s 12:30 p.m. accident were not injured. State police said today the cause of the crash remains under investigation. Alcohol is not believed to be a factor, police said.

Many factors such as excessive speed, sleepiness, carelessness or distraction from cell phone use or texting while driving can contribute to losing control of a vehicle. Additionally, a driver under the influence of alcohol or other substances can lead to serious accidents.
