Tragic accident in Whitman MA under investigation

A tragic accident is under investigation, after a 38-year-old man was hit and killed while crossing the street in Whitman, Mass.

A young girl riding her bicycle was also seriously hurt in the accident, and was rushed to the hospital. The accident happened around 2 p.m. on Sunday afternoon on Temple Street. Police say the little girl and her mother’s boyfriend were crossing the street, but were not in a crosswalk at the time of the accident.

At last check, the little girl was listed in stable condition and suffering from traumatic injuries. The male victim, identified as Edward Cordwell, Jr. died in the accident.

“It’s very sad. It’s not what you want to see on a Sunday afternoon. It’s scary,” Witness Daryl Greenwood said. The 46-year-old driver of the Dodge Ram truck stopped to help, and so did the Whitman Fire chief. The accident happened right outside of the chief’s house.

“It was a bit stressful at first. Your instincts lock in, I had my portable radio and I radioed in for ambulances and medflight helicopters,” Chief Tim Grenno said. The 4-year-old girl was taken to Massachusetts General Hospital, where she continues to suffer from traumatic injuries.

“We don’t know why they might have been in the street or any other contributing factors of the nature of the crash,” Deputy Chief Tim Hanlon said.

Police have seized the cell phone of the driver as part of the investigation.
